Cover Crops for Sustainable Agriculture
Cover crops have been used for centuries. By and large they have been replaced with fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and other synthetic inputs that make farming 'easier'. Now, as these inputs are becoming prohibitively expensive, and much has been learned about the detrimental and erosive effects they have on the soil's delicate ecosystems, cover crops are once again proving their value in sustainable agriculture. Cover crop knowledge is being re-learned, particularly how they improve soil health by mimicking nature. It's now apparent that if we feed the soil, the soil will feed our cash crops.
